Divorcing? Don’t rush to have surgery

carloswolfmd@aol.com

Q. I am getting divorced and can’t wait to take care of myself. What are your suggestions as to what I should do first and what my time frame should be? I’m ready to go!

A. My first suggestion: Slow down! It’s great that you want to take care of yourself, but if you don’t watch out you may get a little ahead of yourself. Plastic surgery is something you have to be both physically and mentally ready to do. If you are not ready in both ways, surgery often doesn’t go as well as it should.

I often see patients who come to me with an unnatural rush to have “everything” done. While it would be in my best interest to do it all, I often tell my patients to slow down. Having seen many divorced patients, I am keenly aware of some of the trials and tribulations they have gone through or will go through once the divorce is finalized. My patients often tell me they feel like they look old and tired and need a face lift. But very often a “plastic surgery time-out” is in order. This time-out is a process during which I offer treatments that temporarily provide a self-confidence boost, and give my patient some time to make a more rational decision.

The “divorce package” that I recommend to my patients includes a hydra-facial to improve skin quality, fillers to improve wrinkles and loss of volume in his or her face and a neuro-modulator (Botox or Dysport) to get rid of wrinkles and provide a chemical forehead lift. This package varies depending on age and physical findings.

By giving my patients the boost they need, they can then make a more rational decision when it comes to surgery.

If you are interested in body surgery in order to feel more attractive, it may be in order sooner than later, as there are not as many temporizing procedures. Naturally, you should pick a physician you feel comfortable with and that you feel has your best interest in mind.

Diana Diaz

Archived Reports:

It’s a facelift that takes less than an hour, and no cutting is involved. 7’s Diana Diaz shows how a liquid lift is helping patients regain their youthful looks.

WSVN — Maria Andrews works hard to stay in shape.

Maria Andrews: “I’m very active. I usually will run, bike or swim everyday.”

But that active lifestyle has taken a toll on her face.

Maria Andrews: “I’ve been doing triathlons for 12 plus years. It definitely causes you to lose volume in your face. You get that sunken-in look in your cheek area.”

Amy Mangialetto was just beginning to see the first signs of aging.

Amy Mangialetto: “I would say the biggest thing that struck me, and that I’ve noticed over the years, was the brow. My brow lines, the nasolabial fold lines.”

She felt too young to go under the knife for a facelift.

Amy Mangialetto: “Honestly, at my age, surgery was not a route that I was really ready to go down. I wanted something natural.”

Both women jumped at the chance to have what’s called a liquid facelift.

Dr. Carlos Wolf, Facial Plastic Surgeon: “What the liquid facelift does is allows physicians to enhance patients without surgery.”

Instead of a scalpel, Dr. Carlos Wolf uses a combination of injections at the same time to give patients a more youthful face.

Dr. Carlos Wolf: “You can do it in probably 30 minutes to an hour. Oftentimes much less than 30 minutes because not everybody needs every aspect of the liquid facelift.”

Dr. Wolf first uses fillers like Restylane, Perlane or Juvederm to plump up areas of the face where you’ve lost volume, then Botox or Dysport to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

Often, a product like Sculptra is injected for facial contouring. It helps patients re-grow their own collagen.

Dr. Carlos Wolf: “Over the next two to three weeks, your body makes collagen and it fills it in.”

The benefits of a liquid facelift over a surgical facelift: the cost is much less and there’s no downtime.

Dr. Carlos Wolf: “You could have the injection and really be out the next day. With a facelift, you’re talking about eight to 10 days of recovery.”

The downsides: results are temporary. The total effects usually wear off within six to nine months, and it’s not a replacement for someone who really needs surgery.

Amy had the liquid facelift a few weeks ago and loves her new look.

Amy Mangialetto: “I would say the comments that everyone gave to me after was that I looked refreshed.”

Maria just had the procedure and is hopeful the liquid lift will give her the rejuvenation she wants.

Dr. Carlos Wolf: “Now she’s got contour. Youth is contour.”

Maria Andrews: “I’m excited. I love it. I think it looks great. This procedure definitely filled out the cheeks and brings a more youthful appearance to your whole face.”

Diana Diaz: “The liquid lift can cost anywhere from $2500 to $3000. A surgical facelift can cost around $6,000.”
