Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Surgery is used to enhance the appearance of the eyes by removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids. This procedure can make tired eyes look younger by lifting the upper eyelids and removing puffy bags from the lower eyelids.

However, it can not correct dark under eye circles or wrinkles around the eyes.

Eyelid surgery can be done in conjunction with other procedures such as facelift and brow lift to achieve the desired look. Your surgeon will advise you what you will benefit most from.

Good candidates for Eyelid Surgery:

  • You have tired looking eyes due to age or heredity.
  • You are in good physical and emotional health.
  • You have realistic expectations.

Your cosmetic consultation:

During your initial consultation, you will meet the plastic surgeon and staff. Your medical history, medications you are presently taking, and physical and emotional health will be reviewed. Photographs may be taken for your medical record. Your surgeon will examine your eyes and determine if you will benefit from surgery of all four lids or just your upper or lower eyelids. The risks and limitations of surgery will be reviewed. And an office staff member will provide you with surgical costs and details of the surgery. Preoperative and postoperative guidelines will also be provided.

Preparing for your surgery:

  • You must have preoperative testing.
  • You must avoid certain medications prior to your surgery.
  • You must stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.
  • You must arrange for help or care following surgery.

About Blepharoplasty surgery:

  • You will require anesthesia. Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local sedation along with intravenous sedation.
  • It is an outpatient procedure.
  • You should bring a pair of dark sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun after your surgery.
  • The incisions are made in the creases of your upper eyelids and just below the lash line of the lower eyelids.
  • If fat is to be removed from the lower eyelids, the incisions will be made inside the lower eyelids. This procedure is called Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty and is performed on patients whose major complaint is fat pockets beneath the eyelid.

Recovery following surgery:

  • An ointment will be applied to your eyes after surgery.
  • Your doctor will prescribe pain medication.
  • You must maintain your head elevated for a couple of days.
  • You will be instructed to apply cold compresses the first 24 hours following surgery to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • You may need eyedrops to relieve dryness in the eye.
  • Tearing, light sensitivity and blurry vision may be temporary complaints.
  • You must refrain from wearing contact lenses for about 10 days following your surgery.
  • You may have bruising for several weeks following your surgery.
  • You may use make up to cover any bruising once your doctor instructs you.

Your final result:

Healing is a gradual process and it may take up to six months to see your final result.

Ultimately, your eyes will brighten your face. You will appear less tired and more alert. Your new look will last for years.
