Facelift  is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to reduce the visible signs of aging on your face by tightening the skin and deeper tissues.

Good candidates for a Facelift:

  • You have deep lines and wrinkles in the face and neck.
  • You have loose, sagging skin in the cheeks and jawline.
  • You have deep folds in the creases between your nose and mouth.
  • You are in good physical and emotional health.
  • You have realistic expectations.

Your cosmetic consultation:

During your initial consultation, you will meet with the plastic surgeon and staff. Your previous surgeries, medical history, and medications you are presently taking will be reviewed. Your overall physical and emotional health will be assessed. Your skin quality, deepness of wrinkles and folds, and facial bone structure will also be evaluated. Your plastic surgeon will recommend what you will benefit most from and if you will need additional surgery in conjunction with the facelift to achieve your desired result. For example, your doctor may suggest eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or laser resurfacing to complete your look. Risks and limitations associated with the surgery will also be discussed. An office staff member will review surgical costs.

Preparing for your surgery:

  • You must have preoperative testing.
  • You must avoid certain medications prior to surgery.
  • You must stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.
  • You must arrange for help or care following your surgery.

About Facelift surgery:

  • Your surgery may be scheduled in a hospital or office operating room.
  • Your surgeon will determine the type of anesthesia administered.
  • Incisions are placed along the hairline. Your surgeon will explain exact placement of the incisions.
  • The loose skin is raised and underlying tissues are tightened.
  • Some fat may be suctioned.
  • Excess skin is removed.
  • Remaining skin is pulled and tightened.
  • Your surgeon may recommend you spend one night in the hospital.

Recovery following surgery:

  • Recovery varies with each individual and depends on the extent of surgery.
  • Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to make you more comfortable.
  • Keeping your head elevated will help minimize swelling and bruising.
  • Surgical drains may be placed to prevent fluid accumulation.
  • Sutures or staples are removed between five to ten days following surgery.
  • Recovery usually takes two to three weeks.
  • Hair or makeup may hide scars.
  • Swelling will continue to subside after several weeks.
  • Direct sun exposure should be avoided the months following surgery.

Your final result:

Once your healing process is over you will notice a fresh and more youthful appearance. It is important to realize a facelift will not reverse the aging process, but it will rejuvenate your look and increase your self-confidence.
