Liposuction Plastic Surgery Liposuction
also known as Lipoplasty is a cosmetic procedure used to remove unwanted
fat from specific areas of the body. This procedure reshapes the body’s silhouette.
It is not an alternative to weight loss. Good candidates for liposuction:
- You have localized fat unresponsive to diet and exercise.
- You are
of normal weight.
- You are in good physical and emotional health.
- You
have firm, elastic skin.
- You have realistic expectations.
Your
cosmetic consultation:During your initial consultation, you will meet
with the plastic surgeon and staff. Your physical and emotional health will be
assessed and photographs may be taken for your medical record. Your surgeon will
examine the areas of your body that you are unhappy with. The quality of skin
and amount of fat will be evaluated. Your surgeon will then recommend what you
would benefit most from. You will meet with an office staff member to review surgical
costs. Details of the surgery will be explained. And the risks and limitations
associated with surgery will be reviewed. Preparing for your surgery:
- You must have preoperative testing.
- You must avoid certain medications
prior to surgery.
- You must stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.
- You must arrange for help or care following your surgery.
About
Liposuction: - Liposuction is an outpatient procedure.
- Your
surgeon may suggest intravenous sedation for anesthesia.
- There are various
techniques for liposuction. Your surgeon will recommend which is best for you.
- Suction-assisted liposuction is the traditional method. A cannula is
inserted through a small incision made through the skin. Fat is removed by vacuum
pressure.
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) is a liposuction technique
which uses ultrasound waves to break up and liquefy fat cells. The fat is then
suctioned out.
UAL is used where denser fat is present, or when larger
volumes are removed. Recovery following surgery: - You
must have someone with you immediately following your surgery.
- You will
be released in a support garment. This garment must be worn for three weeks. It
allows the tissues to compress and heal properly.
- You may experience
fluid drainage from the incision sights.
- You may have temporary numbness
after surgery.
- You may resume light activity after a few days.
- Swelling
and bruising will subside after a few weeks.
- You will notice results
soon after surgery.
- Your final shape is evident a few months after surgery.
