Rhinoplasty

Surgery of the Nose is a surgical procedure used to improve the appearance of the nose. This procedure can dramatically change the way a person looks. Some patients may benefit with a chin augmentation in combination with a Rhinoplasty to balance the facial features.

Reasons to consider Rhinoplasty:

  • You are unhappy with the size and/or shape of your nose.
  • You suffered an injury that has altered the appearance of your nose.
  • You have breathing problems.

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty:

  • If you are a young patient, you must reach mature growth before having surgery of the nose. (About age fifteen or sixteen)
  • You must have good physical and emotional health.
  • You must have realistic expectations.

Your cosmetic consultation:

During your initial consultation, you will meet the plastic surgeon and staff. It is important you feel comfortable with your surgeon. Your physical and emotional health will be reviewed and photographs may be taken for your medical record. Your surgeon will examine the size and shape of your nose, skin type, and nasal structures. Additional surgery such as chin augmentation will also be discussed. The risks and limitations associated with surgery will be reviewed. An office staff member will provide you with surgical costs and additional information.

Preparing for your surgery:

  • You must have preoperative testing
  • You must avoid certain medications prior to surgery.
  • You must stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.
  • You must arrange for help or care following your surgery.

About Rhinoplasty surgery:

  • You will require anesthesia.
  • This is an outpatient procedure. You will be released to go home the day of surgery.
  • Most of the incisions are made inside the nose.
  • Some bone and cartilage are removed.
  • A splint is applied to the new nose to help keep its shape.

Recovery following surgery:

  • Packing may be removed the day after surgery.
  • Your doctor will prescribe pain medication to help you feel more comfortable.
  • Swelling and bruising around the eyes is expected.
  • Nasal dressings and splints are removed a week after surgery.
  • You must maintain your head elevated after surgery.
  • If you wear glasses, arrangements must be made so that the eyeglasses do not interfere with your healing.
  • Direct sun exposure must be avoided during the healing process.
  • You must refrain from any vigorous activities until your surgeon advises.

Your final result:

Healing is a gradual process and varies with each individual. Once swelling has subsided your new nose will be evident. However, final results are not seen until several months following surgery.
