Rhinoplasty Surgery in Miami, FL

What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic reconstructive procedure done by our plastic surgeons to either correct the structure of your nose or improve breathing through your nose. This procedure, which is also referred to as a nose job or nose surgery, can dramatically improve and balance facial proportions. Rhinoplasty can be performed in men and women and across all races, including Caucasian, Asian, African American, and Hispanic populations. There are two types of rhinoplasty procedures: closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty is performed directly through the nostrils, leaving no scars. Open rhinoplasty involves the use of incisions between the nostrils in order to reshape the nose.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery?

For patients who previously had a nose job and need to undergo surgery again to correct both the structure of the nose as well as breathing functionality of the nose, a revision rhinoplasty surgery, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is also available. The cost of a revision rhinoplasty may differ from your initial procedure. A consultation with our rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty cosmetic specialists can help you learn more about treatment price, treatment schedules, and other valuable information.

If you live in Miami, rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty is best performed by the professionals at Miami Plastic Surgery®. Why trust the most central feature on your face to anything less? Not only do we see superior results, but we also provide a caring and professional environment that will help you feel confident and secure in your personal decision to undergo this aesthetic surgery.

What Does Rhinoplasty Surgery Involve?

Proficient in nose surgery, Miami Plastic Surgery® surgeons and specialists take care of you from preoperative preparation to recovery and post-operative appointments. We take the time to make sure every individual who comes to our Miami facility thoroughly understands every phase of the procedure:

  • First there is an initial consultation. We at Miami Plastic Surgery® want to make sure your vision for your rhinoplasty is congruent with our plan. We want to be sure your expectations are realistic and that we understand what your desired outcome is.
  • Next is the actual procedure. You will require anesthesia.
  • In most patients, incisions are made only inside the nose. Some bone and cartilage are removed or reshaped and a splint is applied to the new nose to help keep its shape.
  • This is an outpatient procedure. You will be released to go home the day of surgery.
  • It is recommended that you take off work for at least two weeks after having rhinoplasty surgery.
  • You will have fully recovered from your rhinoplasty surgery by the end of three months.

How Old Do I Have to Be to Get a Nose Job?

Each patient is unique and their circumstances need to be understood prior to rhinoplasty surgery. In general, it is important for potential rhinoplasty patients to be both physically and emotionally mature.

Physical maturity:

Growth of the nose should stabilize prior to surgery, as continued growth after rhinoplasty can change the appearance of the nose and cause facial problems.

Emotional maturity:

Changing your nose can alter your appearance. Surgeons need to ensure the patients are ready for this.

The general age recommendation for most patients is between the ages of 15–17 for women and 16–18 for men.

At Miami Plastic Surgery®, we know how important it is for you to have that great boost of confidence when walking out our doors. With a staff of top-quality rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty surgeons, we make it our mission to give you the best possible results with the least amount of pain.

Why do people have rhinoplasty?

No one should have to live with a nose they hate seeing every morning in the mirror. At Miami Plastic Surgery®, our nose surgery patients usually want to change their nose for reasons that fall into three categories:

  •     Appearance — Cosmetically changing the appearance of the nose is the most popular reason for this surgery. This is because the nose occupies such a prominent place on the human face. These are some of the issues usually addressed:

o   The tip is enlarged or bulbous

o   There is a bump or depression on the bridge of the nose

o   The tip droops

o   The nose is out of proportion with the rest of the face

o   The nostrils are excessively flared

o   The nose is crooked or off-center

  •     Injury — Trauma to the nose could be recent or from a previous injury that was never addressed.
  •     Function — Whether the problem is congenital or from trauma, nose surgery can open restricted nasal passages and improve function. This can improve the patient’s sleep.

What is recovery like after rhinoplasty?

womanWhen your surgery is complete, your nose will be packed, and your surgeon will place a splint on it. This splint will stay in place for about one week. We’ll provide a cold compress to help minimize swelling, but there will be swelling and bruising. This is inevitable with the degree of tissue trauma involved in rhinoplasty.

For the first week, it will be necessary to keep your head elevated as much as possible, even when sleeping. The area around your eyes and nose will be bruised and swollen usually for 10-14 days. If you wear glasses, they will need to be taped to your forehead for up to seven weeks to keep any pressure off your nose. Any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting that increases blood flow to the face needs to be strictly avoided for several weeks. We will discuss your restrictions at length with you, giving you a timeframe to return to your typical exercise and activity routines.

Will my nose still be unique after having rhinoplasty?

At Miami Plastic Surgery®, our goal with every cosmetic surgery is for the end result to look completely natural. This is no different when it comes to making changes with rhinoplasty. During your consultation, our surgeons — Drs. Kelly, Wolf, and Polo — will listen to the issues you have with the appearance of your nose and how you’d like to see it change. Then they will put their board-certified surgical skill and experience to the task of making those changes, while keeping your nose uniquely yours.

Nose surgery is unique to each patient. At Miami Plastic Surgery® we never aspire to use a cookie cutter approach with anything we do at our three locations. You’ll love your new nose, but it will still definitely be your nose.

Can rhinoplasty improve the function of my nose and the appearance?

womanIf a patient comes in with both aesthetic issues and functional issues, we can address both in this procedure. Or, if there are only functional issues, that can be the singular goal.

If you feel that your breathing is somewhat impeded, this is something to discuss with your Miami Plastic Surgery® surgeon during your consultation. That way he can plan to open your airways to some degree while he is making the cosmetic changes you seek. In these cases, breathing can be improved.

How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?

These procedures are done on an outpatient basis. They typically take between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the changes being made.

What are the main benefits of having rhinoplasty?

Our nose has such a prominent place on our face that if you don’t like the way it looks it can be a real downer. A bulbous tip. A bump on the bridge. Flared nostrils. Whatever you don’t like about your nose, it’s right there looking at you every morning in the mirror.

These surgeries at Miami Plastic Surgery® can be very satisfying for our patients. Often, patients feel their reshaped nose changes their entire face for the better. It’s hard to even quantify what that means for a person, especially if you’ve lived your whole life hating your nose.

When can I return to exercise after rhinoplasty?

The problem with exercise after rhinoplasty is blood flow to the face. Working out too strenuously too soon after your surgery can lead to bleeding. In most cases, light walking is all that should be done. We allow our nose surgery patients to begin gentle, not-impact exercise, such as swimming or bicycling, in three to four weeks. Running and impact exercise needs to wait.

After about six weeks, your nose structures should be healed, and you can return to most exercise routines. Contact sports may need to wait even a couple weeks more. Ask your surgeon about this if you participate in sports such as hockey or basketball.

How much pain is involved with this procedure?

This isn’t an overly painful recovery. It’s more a question of discomfort due to having to sleep upright, being careful not to bump or put any weight on your new nose, and the lingering swelling. Swelling can come and go for months, especially at night. Most of the pain involved will resolve within the first few days.
